What happened
Groove Synthesis has released OS 2.0a for all three 3rd Wave models—the keyboard plus the 24M and 8M desktop modules—as a free update. Two additions lead it: a Shimmer Verb sitting in effect slot two behind Super Plate, and a third analysis mode inside Make Waves, the instrument's own wavetable builder.
The shimmer shifts its reverb tail in fractions of a semitone across a two-octave range, from an octave down to an octave up. Reverb time, pitch amount and the low- and high-pass cutoff are all mod-matrix destinations, so the effect can be made to breathe instead of sitting still. The release also brings expanded MIDI CC mapping for the two desktop modules, SysEx import and export of wavetables and samples, and an envelope retrigger option with a quick reset.
The interesting bit
The spectral mode is the deeper change. The existing Make Waves modes either track pitch or hunt for splice points in the waveform itself; spectral analyses the file in the frequency domain and picks its slices from across the whole recording. That suits material which never holds still—chorused sounds, field recordings, anything whose pitch wanders—where pitch tracking simply gives up.
Wavetable synthesis has always had an awkward gap between loading a factory table and building one properly. A more forgiving analysis, running on the instrument rather than in an editor on a laptop, narrows it.
