Music, in plain words

What A, B, C and that little ♯ actually mean — and what every knob on the instruments does — for people who don't read music.

Never learned to read music? You don't need to — not here. But a few words show up on the instruments (those letters, the little , numbers like C4) and on the knobs. Here's what they all mean, in plain English, with things you can press and hear.

The seven letters

Music uses just seven letters for its notes: A B C D E F G. After G it starts over at A again. On the little keyboard above, those seven letters are the white keys — press them left to right and you walk up the alphabet, then it loops.

That's it. Everything else in music is built from re-using those seven names higher and lower. There's no “H” — after G you're back to A.

The black keys: sharps and flats

Between most of the white keys sits a black key — a note that lives in the crack between two letters. We name it after a neighbour plus a symbol:

  • Sharp (♯) means “a tiny bit higher.” The black key just above C is C♯ (“C sharp”).
  • Flat (♭) means “a tiny bit lower.” That same black key, seen from the D above it, is D♭ (“D flat”).

Yes — one black key has two names. It's the same as saying “quarter past” and “fifteen minutes” for the same time. Tap the sharps / flats switch on the keyboard above to see both spellings. Counting white and black keys, there are twelve notes in all before the pattern repeats.

High and low: octaves and the number

Play a C, then the next C up — they sound like the “same note,” just higher. That gap is an octave(“oct” = eight, because you pass eight white keys getting there). Because the seven letters repeat over and over, we add a number to say which one we mean:

  • C4 is “middle C” — the C near the middle of a piano.
  • C3 is one octave lower (deeper); C5 is one octave higher (brighter).

So when an instrument shows A4 or F♯3, it's just telling you the note letter and how high up it sits.

Keys and scales — the mood

A scaleis a small family of notes that sound good together — a pre-chosen palette. Most songs pick one family and mostly stay in it; that choice is the song's key.

Two families do most of the work, and they carry a feeling:

  • Major = bright, happy, resolved.
  • Minor = darker, moodier, wistful.

So “the key of A minor” just means “the moody family that starts on A.” In the Studio there's a single KEY setting, and every instrument obeys it — which is why they always sound in tune together.

The knobs, in plain English

Different instruments, but the labels repeat. Here's what the common ones actually do:

VOLUME / VOL
How loud it is. That's the whole story.
CUTOFF
A brightness dial. Turn it down and the sound gets muffled and dark (like a blanket over a speaker); turn it up and it gets bright and buzzy.
RESONANCE / RESO
Adds a whistle or honk right at the brightness point. A little gives character; a lot gets squelchy and vocal — the classic acid sound.
ATTACK
How quickly a note fades in. Zero = an instant hit; higher = it swells in softly, like a bowed string.
DECAY / RELEASE
How long a note takes to fade away after you play it. Short = a pluck or a stab; long = it rings out.
ENV / ENV MOD
How much the note's shape also opens the brightness — so each note starts bright and mellows as it fades.
TONE
A tilt between dark and bright — a quick way to warm up or brighten the whole sound.
DRIVE / CRUSH
Grit. Drive adds warm overdrive; crush makes it gnarly and digital.
SPACE / REVERB / ECHO
Room. Turn it up and the sound feels like it's in a hall, or repeats as an echo.
SWING
Nudges every other beat a little late, so a drum groove feels human and rolls instead of marching.
