PlasticSynth is built to be private by default. You don't make an account, and the instruments themselves run entirely in your browser. This page explains, in plain English, exactly what happens to your camera, your microphone, and your data.
Camera & microphone
A few features ask for hardware access. The PS-AER Theremin uses your webcam to track hand motion. The PS-GRN sampler and the PS-VOX voice transformer record a short clip from your microphone, and the generator's listen-and-jam feature listens to your microphone for a few seconds to estimate a key and tempo. In every case the input is processed in real time by code running in your browser and is never transmitted, uploaded or stored on any server. The camera image never leaves your device; a recorded sound lives only in the page you're on (or in a session you choose to save) and is otherwise gone when you close the tab. Access is only ever requested when you actively start that feature, and your browser lets you revoke the permission at any time.
What's stored on your device
Your Studio session autosaves to your browser's localStorage so your work is still there when you come back. This data stays on your machine — it is not sent to us. Clearing your browser storage for this site removes it. Saving a session to a file writes a normal file to your computer that only you have.
Analytics
To understand which instruments people enjoy and where the site can improve, PlasticSynth may use Google Analytics to record anonymous, aggregateusage — things like which pages are visited and which instruments are opened. This data is not tied to your identity, and we do not sell it or use it to track you across other sites. If analytics is enabled it may set cookies for this purpose; you can opt out with Google's browser add-onor your browser's privacy controls, and the site works exactly the same either way.
Cloud sharing
Sharing a studio session to the cloud is optional and only happens when you explicitly choose to share. When you do, the notes and settings of that session are stored on our backend so a link can play it back — the shareable data, and nothing else. If you never press share, nothing about your session leaves your browser.
The “describe a track” box
The generatorcan turn a plain-English description into a track. By default this runs entirely in your browser with a simple keyword matcher, and nothing you type leaves your device. If the person running this site has connected an AI service, the few words you type are sent to that service (Anthropic's API) once, only to pick a genre, key and tempo — never your sessions, recordings, or anything else. It's a single short request, made only when you press the button.
What we don't do
- No accounts, sign-ups or passwords for playing the instruments.
- No selling or sharing of personal data — we don't collect any to begin with.
- No third-party advertising or cross-site tracking.
- No uploading of your camera, microphone, or local sessions without your explicit action.
Children
PlasticSynth is a music toy suitable for all ages. Because it doesn't collect personal information or require an account, it can be played without providing any data about yourself.
