What happened
Pittsburgh Modular has released the Lifeforms SV-2, a semi-modular analog synthesizer built around a newly designed triangle-core oscillator, its state-variable Pittsburgh Filter and a spring-reverb signal path. It is available now at a suggested retail price of $1,499.
The oscillator section adds thru-zero FM, phase modulation, pulse-symmetry shaping and a proprietary Blade Wave. The filter introduces two Character modes and customized overdrive, while saturation appears at six points across the complete signal path.
The interesting bit
SV-2 is not pretending that subtractive synthesis needs to be reinvented. Instead, it treats the old left-to-right architecture as a stable frame for more animated harmonic movement and deliberately placed distortion.
Switchable mono, one-button paraphonic and patchable duophonic paths make the voice structure part of the sound-design process. Dual envelopes can move from short percussion to long pads, while the reverb can feed back into self-oscillation.
