What happened
For 808 Day 2026, Roland partnered with NTS on The Future Is Still 808, a three-part radio documentary hosted by artist and NTS resident Shy One and produced by Nick Dwyer. The broadcasts were scheduled for August 8, 11 and 22, with the complete series available to stream afterward.
Roland also brought back episodes of its animated Rhythm Creators series, including its Mannie Fresh installment, and refreshed the company's TR-808 archive page.
The interesting bit
The NTS series is framed as a journey from the instrument's Japanese origin into Chicago house, Detroit techno and the many scenes across Asia, Europe and South America that found different meanings inside the same handful of sounds.
That is the useful version of gear history: not a museum label for a rare box, but a chain of people hearing unfinished possibilities in something affordable, strange and initially unsuccessful.
