Project LYDIA puts neural sampling into a pedal you can question

Roland and Neutone's second prototype adds integrated audio, a display, presets and MIDI while keeping its Raspberry Pi heart open to experiments beyond the supplied model.

What happened

Roland Future Design Lab and Tokyo-based Neutone advanced Project LYDIA to a second public prototype. The neural-sampling processor gained integrated audio inputs and outputs, an LCD, user preset memories, MIDI and a hardware design that makes Raspberry Pi 5 installation easier.

With the Pi installed, incoming sound can be transformed through neural audio models. Without it, the unit can still operate as a configurable USB MIDI controller through its integrated Raspberry Pi Pico. The prototype made its hands-on debut at Superbooth Berlin in May.

The interesting bit

LYDIA is being shown as an unfinished, feedback-led experiment rather than a product with a launch date. That gives musicians a rare chance to argue about the workflow and the purpose before the object is locked into manufacturing.

The open Raspberry Pi foundation matters too. A neural model is one possible instrument inside the enclosure, not the enclosure's permanent identity—a much healthier relationship between fast-moving software and durable stage hardware.
