Build a music box

Mallets, a light arpeggio and soft chords in a clockwork loop.

You will make

A bright, delicate major-key loop with three parts moving at different densities.

Build it, one layer at a time

Choose the chime

Start with the mallet bars and a simple repeating figure. Let the natural ring finish instead of filling every gap.

Listen for: A clear attack followed by enough silence to hear the decay.

Add clockwork

Bring in the arpeggiator at a lower level. It supplies regular motion while the mallets remain the character voice.

Listen for: A steady mechanism underneath free-ringing notes.

Reveal the harmony

Add the progression quietly. The listener should feel the chord changes before noticing the chord track itself.

Listen for: The same motif taking on a new colour as harmony moves.
▶ Open checkpoint 3 in Studio

Polish the box

Keep the low end light and use only a little send. Too much reverb blurs the tiny attacks that make the idea feel mechanical.

Listen for: Small, precise strikes inside a warm but readable space.

Make it yours
